The forum will discuss potential standardization of methods and practices for capturing and evaluating drone imagery in commercial real estate assessment and management applications. Jim Bartlett, Chairman of Subcommittee E50.02 on Real Estate Assessment and Management will host the forum, which will also be open to remote participants.

Proposed Work Item Rationale: Standard Guide for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Assessments of Commercial Real Estate

Commercial real estate assessments, including many associated with the standard guides and practices published by ASTM Committees E50 and E06, (e.g., environmental and property condition due diligence) are increasingly incorporating drone flights to collect aerial imagery and, in turn, perform various analytics in lieu of or as a supplement to in-person observations. Drone reconnaissance of attributes such as roofs, facades, parking/paving and land features, etc., can materially enhance assessment data sets and lead to improved decision-making and project records.

The methods and practices of capturing and evaluating drone flight imagery vary widely and no standard assessment methodology is currently published by ASTM. Standardized guidance could create predictable and beneficial outcomes for the commercial real estate industry, and may also be applicable to governmental and public users. Accordingly, Subcommittee E50.02 members have expressed interest in exploring the development of a Standard Guide for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Assessments of Commercial Sites (or similar). The E50.02-hosted forum will explore guidance for the applied use of drones and the data they can collect in support of commercial real estate assessments.

E50.02 intends to work collaboratively with members of Committee F38 (Drones), Subcommittee E06.25 (Whole Buildings), and other stakeholders to assure that any new work item(s) would leverage, without duplicating, similar standards in development. All interested members are welcome and encouraged to participate!
